Art & Design

Miss M Kewin Art and Design subject Lead

At Farnborough Road Junior School we celebrate the fact that we are all have the potential to be creative artists with a wide range of skills. We want all our children to love art and to see the beauty within it. Through instilling this love of art we want our pupils to recognise the opportunity that art can create for them in roles as artists, sculptors, animators, illustrators and designers.

We see the role of our Art and Design curriculum a means of communication that can help children to investigate, understand, share and represent both their physical and human environment.  We aim to provide an education that should engage, inspire and challenge our pupils. In doing so we equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  As pupils progress both through the school and within our curriculum, we equip them with the skills so they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Through the work of exploring local, national and international artist we will provide children with the opportunity to be able to take inspiration from great artists and to generate their own ideas.

Our pupils’ understanding of Art and Design is developed through knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the work of other artists past and present and from different cultures. Our creative curriculum Art and Design is also accessed in other subjects. The children are encouraged to express their creative ideas in a secure and appreciative environment. Pupils are shown how to work with a range of materials and equipment including modroc, clay, textiles and digital media and are taught various techniques in areas such as drawing, painting, printing, and mark marking.

We want our children to recognise that art and design is essential to the human spirit. It makes you think and takes you places. When you walk by art, you have to look at it and wonder. We want children to feel so many things when they look at art; empathy, longing, desire, anger, disgust, connection, and much more. Art says things that words just can’t say. No matter which part of the world a piece of art is from, it doesn’t need words to understand.

CURRICULUM INTENT

We aim to be an outstanding school at the heart of our local community. We want to create a happy, safe, caring and inclusive learning environment where every child will become an independent learner who achieves their full potential. In partnership with families, we will help pupils to become responsible young people who are on a pathway to success.

At Farnborough Road Junior School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children's entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Farnborough Junior School is based on the National Curriculum and supported with a clear skills progression map and whole school Curriculum Map  ensuring a well structured approach to this creative subject.

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning, these include, Monet, Banksy, Wiliam Morris, L.S Lowry and Quentin Blake.

On a rolling process the children's learning is further enhanced with a whole school arts week where the children have the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists.

Through effective teaching and carefully thought out sequences of lessons we create a strong focus on developing children’s skills in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture. Children develop their understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and 3D form) by providing an accessible and engaging curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential. This goes hand in hand with the overall intention of developing a rigorous understanding, critical awareness and inspiration of art and design. The art and design curriculum aims to develop the understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages. We ensure pupils have the opportunity to study a diverse range of male and female artists and designers throughout history from Banksy to Michelangelo .

CURRICULUM IMPLENTATION
At FRJS we provide a skills-based art and design curriculum; allowing children to express their creative imagination as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. At the core of this we study key artists, and pupils are encouraged to reflect on the artists’ work and their own, so they critically evaluate using appropriate artistic vocabulary. The FRJS art and design curriculum not only meets National Curriculum requirements but will provide enjoyable and hopefully inspirational art lessons that will develop their art skills and prepare them for the next stage in their education.

Lessons are taught in termly or half termly blocks and have a strong focus on studying existing pieces of art, sketching aspects of these, with a particular focus on the necessary skills, before completing a final piece.  Areas covered include sculpture (including the work of Sir Henry Moore and Michelangelo ), mosaics, printing (based on Joaquin Torres Garcia and Escher) work such as the Tudor houses, nature, South American  art, Christian art and symbols, painting, Banksy graffiti and the works of the Impressionist artists.  More detail can be found in our Curriculum Map and our medium term planning. We encourage children to receive and give constructive feedback and next steps to improve their work,

Children are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively. The evidence of their work is collected within the art sketch book which follows the children through the school. Photographs of larger, group or 3D pieces are also kept within this book. A large class portfolio is kept by the class teacher.

We also provide a range of enrichment opportunities including art and craft clubs, visits to Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport, and the Liverpool Art Gallery. We have links with the local community to showcase our work and encourage the children to enter both national and local competitions and exhibitions such as the Ainsdale Flower Show.

Many aspects of the children's Art is taught as part of their termly or half topic work; although there are discreet art lessons too.

CURRICULUM IMPACT

We have a strong desire for every child to reach their full potential in art and design whilst developing a love and passion for art to carry with them through life. We want art and design to be viewed as both a hobby and pastime but also as a career; as something that not only brings pleasure to the artist but gives pleasure too.

The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow.” – Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
