MFL

French Lead - Charlene Thompson

French is taught throughout the school. The class teachers deliver their own lessons through a variety of both spoken and written activities. Through our French lessons we aim to enable pupils to understand and express ideas, and to ask and respond to simple questions, facts and feelings in both speech and writing.

Music is a big part of our French curriculum and children have the opportunity to appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the target language. We follow the Language Angel scheme which makes French fun for all ages.

Curriculum Intent

We aim to be an outstanding school at the heart of our local community. We want to create a happy, safe, caring and inclusive learning environment where every child will become an independent learner who achieves their full potential. In partnership with families, we will help pupils to become responsible young people who are on a pathway to success.

Curriculum Implementation

In KS2 lessons, teachers begin by greeting the class, e.g. ‘Bonjour la classe!’ and invite children to respond in French, e.g. ‘Bonjour Madame/Monsieur.’ Previous vocabulary will then be revisited and revised through a variety of games and activities – counting, asking how each other are feeling, saying the day and date etc.

After that, new vocabulary and any sentence structures will then be introduced and built upon. Teachers plan their lessons using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources but supplement this with their own ideas and experience. Each lesson will focus on a combination of the 5 key language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar). Resources will include Language Angels PowerPoints and interactive whiteboard materials, interactive games plus songs & raps and differentiated consolidation activities such as role play and card games

Where appropriate, teachers make links to SPAG in order to develop children’s overall understanding of language and its structure. Children’s Geography skills are also developed by looking at French speaking countries around the world and locating these on maps.

Curriculum Impact

We strive for every child to achieve their full potential in French and develop curiosity and excitement about their own language and the languages others speak. We want them to be ready for their next stage in learning and we want to inspire aspirations for the future career paths.
