  • Reading and Tables Challenges 2015

    Sun 27 Sep 2015 FRJS

Congratulations to the children who completed our Summer Challenges this year.

We set up schemes to encourage the children to read and learn their multiplication tables during the summer break. We were delighted with how many took part and we enjoyed seeing lots of photos too!

On Friday in assembly we presented some prizes and certificates to the children who completed the challenges.

Well done everyone who took part - we are planning for 2016 already.

  • Girls Football Tournament

Fri 25 Sep 2015 Mr Tong

Mr Tong took a team of Year 5 and 6 girls to a Football Tournament in Formby last Friday. As it was the first time they had played together and we hadn't had much time to practice, the girls did brilliantly.

Emily, Abbey, Ami, Lucy, Brianna, Kerry, Harvee and Page all played 7 games and ended up winning 4, including a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Every girl played their part, with Harvee weighing in with 4 goals in the tournament.

I am looking forward to many more matches with the squad this year, well done girls.

  • Farnborough Southport Champions 2015

Thu 24 Sep 2015 Nick Hanlon

The opening tournament for Southport schools is the Liverpool Cup and Farnborough were the  defending champions - with 5 of last year's squad (Lawrie, Lucas, Bailey, Rico and Rhys)  representing the team for a second year.

Last minute alterations to the squad (losing a keeper and defender) saw some reshuffling of the team but with such a talented set of players we hoped it would work out fine. Totally domination in our opening game saw Farnborough hit the post 4 times, the crossbar once, the side netting twice and their opponents St.Philips failing to reach our penalty area or even register a single shot! However frustratingly the match remained goalless and the boys felt disappointed with their opening result.

Next up were close rivals Churchtown and Farnborough finally scored - Lucas B slotting past their keeper. With Churchtown pressing for an equaliser Bailey was called in to action and he produced a string of outstanding saves to keep the score 1 nil. A tense game saw the final score remain 1 nil and the team were full of thanks for Bailey's heroics in goal.

The final group game was a must win battle with Larkfield and saw Farnborough beginning to relax a little and play some fluent, passing football. Konna, Jack, Rico or Patric were looking secure in defence and our midfield of Theo, Lawrie and Rhys created chance after chance for Lucas. The final score saw a commanding 4 nil victory with goals from Lucas(2), Rhys and Lawrie.

Our semi-final opponents were Norwood and once again the Farnborough team dominated play with Rhys and Theo tormenting the Norwood defence with their tricky wingplay. Theo opened the scoring with a thunderbolt, Lucas and Rhys both scored again and Theo made it a resounding 4 nil with his second of the match.

The final against Holy Trinity was another one-sided affair with Theo and Rhys resuming where they left off in the semi-final. Lawrie broke from midfield and struck the opening goal of the final - the ball rolling through a desperate keepers legs. Rhys smashed in a second that nearly burst the net and Lawrie made it 3 with his final goal of the tournament. Patric and Jack tried to get in on the act at the end and Jack finally made it 4 nil from a corner.

Congratulations to all the team on some outstanding football which was commented on by both parents and teachers. The boys were a pleasure to watch with their teamwork and levels of skills impressing all. Special mention to Bailey who was outstanding in goal and stepped in at the last minute to play all the games in goal. Our defence of Rico, Konna, Jack, Patric and Lawrie didn't concede a single goal in the tournament - quite an achievement!

The team will now represent Southport in the Merseyside finals of the Liverpool Cup later in the season - Good Luck Boys I can't wait to watch more!!

  • A Team Begin Season with a Victory

Sat 19 Sep 2015 Nick Hanlon

A new football season for the Farnborough A Team saw a number of old faces beginning their second season with the team and some new faces joining them.

Last year's players were: Bailey Mc, Lawrie W, Lucas B, Rhys G, Rico S-D, Theo D and Arthur W.

The players making their full debuts were: Jack F, Jack W, Patric L, Konna Tz, and Adam A-B (our Spanish signing!)

Our opening game saw the team facing Norwood in a league game on a bright and sunny Friday evening. The team began in a dominant manner stringing a series of fantastic passing moves together, creating a series of chances before Lucas B opened the season's team account with a well struck goal. The team continued to play well with Konna and Adam working well together in defence. A second goal came with a break down the left with Theo and Lucas setting Rhys up for his first goal of the season. A third goal soon followed with Lawrie passing to Lucas who scored his second. A fourth goal came from a corner with Lucas getting his hat-trick

The second period saw Patric and Arthur looking secure in defence and Jack, Rico and Bailey combining well in midfield. Despite creating a number of chances the match remained 4 nil to Farnborough.

The third period of the game saw Norwood create a couple of chances, however Jack F looked secure in goal.  Rico and Lucas were creating chance after chance and eventually Rico was able to breach the Norwood defences and make it 5-0. Lawrie having switched to the right wing, saw his hard work rewarded with a goal.

The final score saw Farnborough open the season with a 6-1 victory. A fabulous start to the season with some stunning teamwork - well done boys!!

    FRJS Summer Challenge

We have encouraged all children to do our Summer Challenges.

Children now need to return their cards to school so that we can check them and allocate certificates and prizes.

    Reading Challenge

Your child can record all the books they read over the summer holidays with a brief comment about whether they have enjoyed what they have read and why.

    • Bronze Award         Read 6 books
    • Silver Award            Read 8 books
    • Gold Award              Read 10 books

Children need to return the completed reading log to school in September to receive their award.

It would also be great if we could have some pictures of children reading this summer, maybe while you are away on holiday, on a day trip, in the garden or in an unusual place. Email your pictures to school or tweet a photo.

    Times Tables Challenge

The new National Curriculum requires children to have memorised their multiplication tables up to their 12x table by the end of Year 4. We need to work together to encourage children to learn their times tables by heart and develop accurate and faster recall of the related multiplication and division facts. We suggest children learn one x table at a time in the following order and record their progress on the back of their challenge booklet.

    • Year 2 learn 2x, 5x and 10x
    • Year 3 also learn 3x, 4x and 8x
    • Year 4 also learn 6x, 7x, 9x, 11x and 12x
    • Year 5 and Year 6 need to know all of them up to 12x

Bronze Award - Recite the relevant x tables in order, without hesitation. E.g. ‘one two is two.  Two twos are four.  Three twos are six’

Silver Award - Recite the relevant x table and recall it out of order without long pauses. E.g. What is eight multiplied by four?  What is twelve multiplied by three?’

Gold Award – Recite the relevant x table, recall it out of order and know the related division fact. E.g. What is eight multiplied by four? What is 32 divided by eight? What is 32 divided by four?
