  • Y5 - Festival of Speed and Bloodhound SSC

    Thu 17 Mar 2016 Year 5

Over the past couple of days, year 5 pupils have had a brilliant opportunity to learn about and experience some top British engineering in the form of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) and Sir Henry Seagrave's 1926 Sunbeam Tiger, that set the land speed record on Southport Beach 90 years ago!

On Wednesday pupils visited Birkdale High to learn all about the design and use of the Bloodhound SSC. As a part of their visit, the children applied their new knowledge by making small SSC cars that were fired from a high pressure air pump.

Today, children visited the Atkinson in Southport where they took part in an interactive production about Sir Henry Seagrave's life, saw his record breaking car and designed the transport of the future!

  • Year 5&6 Cross Country

    Wed 16 Mar 2016

On Wednesday 16th March we took 17 year 5 & 6 children over to Litherland Sports Park to compete in a Cross Country Competition, There were schools from all over Merseyside. The team showed fantastic team spirit cheering each other on throughout the race, and congratulating team members as they crossed the finish line. I would like to congratulate the whole team for their efforts in a tough competition. We had a good Year 5 boys team, taking 7 in total. 4 of the boys combined places managed a team prize and came 3rd overall, giving them a bronze medal each! Well done to Rhys Graham, Arthur Weights, Ivo Melyov and Edward Sandys.

  • Bake Off 2016 Final

    Wed 16 Mar 2016 S.Allen

The Bake Off Final took place this afternoon with Molly Horton (5/4) being crowned FRJS Bake Off 2016 winner.  All four finalists (Molly, Taryn Sinclair 6/2, John Ottley 4/3 and Sienna Turner 3/2) baked and decorated their cakes independently, to a very high standard.  Mrs Ainley and Mr Klaassen judged the cakes and found the decision very difficult.

The three runner ups received medals, a baking set and an Easter Egg.  Our winner received a trophy, a baking set and an Easter Egg.  A further prize was announced to Molly by Mr Klaassen, she has been invited to spend an afternoon at The Dutch Bakery working alongside Mr Klaassen and his team.  Molly was delighted and can't wait to take up the prize!

A huge thank you to Mr Klaassen for being one of our judges, for providing the Easter Eggs and Molly's extra prize.  Thank you also to Mrs Ainley for being our other judge and supporting the children with their baking.  A huge thank you also to Mr Ralph Gregson for very kindly donating the Baking Sets for the Bake Off Finalists.

Mrs Bigland and Mrs Allen would like to thank all the children who took part in the Bake Off this year and we look forward to even more participating next year!

  • Liverpool 7s Competition 2016

    Tue 15 Mar 2016 FRJS

Congratulations to our A Team who finished as runners up in the Liverpool 7s at Rainhill High School on Tuesday afternoon.

Playing against six other area winners, the boys won 4 and drew one of their games in this prestigious event. The quality of football was very high and the competition fierce throughout.

Goal scorers at the event were Lucas (2), Rhys (2), Bailey, Rico and Jack (from a goal kick). Rhys scored a nerveless last minute penalty to win one of the games but Jack was the hero of the afternoon with a string of great saves to keep the team in the competition.

The runners up position means that the team now qualify for the final of this event. Although the next stage is usually staged at Anfield, we think it will happen at Liverpool Academy due to the extensive building works at Liverpool's ground.

Congratulations to everyone involved and big than you to the families who helped with lifts.

  • Merseyside Athletics 2016

    Fri 11 Mar 2016 FRJS

Congratulations to our Y5 and 6 Athletics team who came second in the prestigious Merseyside Indoor Athletics Competition in Widnes on Friday 11th March 2016.

The event was made up of 14 teams from across the county who have all won their local events so the standard was very high indeed. Our team of 28 children competed in a range of running, jumping and throwing events throughout the day.

The children won silver medals, finishing as runners up to Legh Vale from St Helens.

All of the children performed very well with the highlight being Dylan from Y6 throwing a British record distance for the boys ball throw.

Not only were we proud of the sporting achievement, but we were incredibly proud of their sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the event.

  • World Book Day 2016-Updated with photos

    Fri 04 Mar 2016 FRJS

This year we have celebrated World Book Day in the following ways:-

    · A Readathon where the children will record how much they read during the week.

    · The Readathon will also count towards the inter-class reading competition we have been running this year.

    · Throughout the week the children have taken part in a variety of book-related activities. They have also received a £1 voucher which they can exchange at local bookshops either in part payment for a more expensive book, or for one of the many £1 books produced especially for the occasion.

    · Book swaps have taken place across the school. We  asked      children to bring in any books in good condition which they have finished with. For each book they donated, they received a book swap voucher which they exchanged for a ‘new’ book.

    · And , traditionally we have dressed up as our favourite book characters. Look at the range in the pictures below!

  • Robinwood 2016

    Fri 04 Mar 2016 FRJS

Photos of this trip are now available in the class pages section of this website.

We will use this page to keep you up to date with Robinwood news when we can.

    11.30am

The children have arrived safely and are currently starting their walk up the hill to the centre. There is quite a lot of snow in the area, but it is a lovely day. Their bags are transported up the hill, but they have to walk!!

2.30pm - Lunch is done, the children have been introduced to the staff and now they are on the first session. There is snow in the area but weather is good, if a bit cold! Robinwood have loads of extra clothes for children so there is no chance that your child will be cold. They even wash clothes overnight if required! We are looked after very well at the centre - that is why we keep going back!

    6.30pm

All happy-tea eaten and back out for activities.

Pictures will be updated as and when they are available. Internet connection is weak so we will do what we can!

    Thursday

    12.30pm

The children had a great night and they have had a busy morning of activities. The weather is better today and they are all a little warmer!

Photos are continuing to be a struggle so we will try to make sure we get one group photo and upload it to Twitter and our website. I'm sure you will agree that staff need to be concentrating on their groups rather than photos! We can always upload more when they come home.

    4.30pm

The activities continue thick and fast. The groups work their way around a range including trapeze, crate challenge, zip wire, nightline, climbing, archery and the famous piranha pool. Robinwood have excellent instructors who encourage the children to always push themselves to get everything they can from the visit.

The weather is holding for now although it is possible that we will see some pictures of snowmen in the morning!

    8pm

A very busy day is coming to the end. The children are playing team games before they have a hot drink and go to bed. They will not take long to go to sleep tonight!

The journey home is unlikely to be affected as the site is on major routes that are always well serviced.

    9.30am

The children had a really good sleep last night and have woken to a blanket of snow! They have had a chance to play and I'm sure there will be more photos later. catching all the children on a snowy day for a picture is like trying to catch water in a net!!

Activities continue as normal this morning. The bus company are planning to get to the site a little earlier as the journey is likely to be slow. All roads that we are using are clear as far as we have been informed and the company will continue to watch travel conditions as the day progresses.

We still expect to arrive at the Guildford Road end of school at the planned time but we will keep you up to date on any major changes.

    2.30pm

Lots more snowy pictures below and on our twitter feed.

The children have started their journey home from Robinwood. We will update via twitter for news and text if there is a major delay. We expect the traffic to be slower due to the weather conditions but we are not expecting a significant delay at the current time.
