At Farnborough Road Junior School, we believe that art is a powerful way for children to explore their creativity, express their ideas, and develop new skills. Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to be inclusive, exciting, and hands-on, encouraging all students to explore their artistic potential.
Art is more than just making things—it’s about thinking, problem-solving, and discovering the world in new ways. Whether it’s painting, drawing, sculpture, or digital art, our students engage with a wide variety of materials and techniques, all while learning about famous artists, cultures, and art history.
Through creativity, children gain confidence, develop their own unique artistic voice, and learn how to appreciate and celebrate the work of others. At our school, every child’s artistic journey is important, and we provide a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Our Art and Design curriculum is implemented in a way that fosters creativity, builds skills, and encourages personal expression. We have carefully structured our curriculum to provide varied, hands-on experiences for all of our Key Stage 2 students. Every half term, our students explore a new focus area, allowing them to build on their knowledge and skills progressively throughout the year.
Each term, we focus on a different artistic theme, ensuring that children develop a broad range of techniques, materials, and approaches. Our curriculum is designed to inspire and engage, with each year group working on specific topics that allow them to dive deeper into their artistic practice while fostering a strong sense of achievement.
Across school, children are given the chance to visit galleries and museums helping to support the children in learning about different artists and further providing them with opportunities to experience different forms of culture.
At Farnborough Road, each unit of work is taught through a 4 stage process.
This is taught as follows:
In this stage, children are given a starting point to explore. They will use their drawing and sketching skills to record their initial ideas. From this, they are introduced to a variety of artists and designers and they are given the opportunity to further research the work of other artists and to find out more about them or the artistic style.
During this stage, he children are given the opportunity to develop their initial ideas further. They are taught specific skills to enhance their work. As well as this, children are encouraged to experiment with different techniques and to apply them to materials and processes.
After children have practised and developed their skills, they are given the opportunity to design and create their final piece, applying the skills that have been previously taught.
Throughout the making of their final piece, children are given time to review and reflect on their own and others art work. This allows them to identify what they think or feel about it or how they would adapt it. After completion of their final piece, children evaluate their achievements and how they can further develop future work.
At FRJS, we recognise the diverse needs of each child and support them in reaching their full potential. The impact of our Art and Design curriculum is measured by the experiences and confidence children display when creating their own pieces of art work: they become competent artists.
