Double Title for the A Team

Farnborough Win English School’s and Everton Titles

The A Team collected further silverware at the start of what looks to be an exciting season already. They were taking part in a combined competition run by Everton F.C. and Southport Schools F.A.

Our opening group game saw a rather one-sided encounter with Crossens. Ben Wareing started proceedings with a pile-driver to make it one nil and Oscar scored a further two goals, including a perfectly headed corner, to make the final result three nil.

Second up were Scarisbrick Hall and Ben Lawrenson opened his account for the tournament by claiming a hat-trick, including another one of his pacey breaks down the wing. Oscar scored a fourth for the team to make it four nil to the A Team.

Our final group game against Linaker saw Farnborough already qualified for the semi-finals, so we has a swap about with Kian leading the line, followed by a spell up front for Dana. However, neither players could break the deadlock and it was left to the ever reliable Oscar to smash in the winner with virtually the last kick of the game. Three wins out of three in the group stage and a place in the semi-final against Norwood.

The semi-final was another one-sided affair with Farnborough completely dominating the match. Lawrie was creating havoc on the right wing and his powerful ruun and cross was finished off by the goal poacher Oscar. Rhys, Rico and Lucas created further chances but once again it was Oscar’s strike that sealed a two nil win and a place in the final.

The final was a repeat of the Liverpool Cup against Our Lady of Lourdes and as the rain began to come down Farnborough played some of their best football of the evening. Once again Lawrie looked strong on the right wing and another fine run saw him smash in the opening goal of the final. A victory was sealed by Oscar yet again netting, meaning he had scored in every match of the tournament. Special mention to our goalkeeper George who, when called upon looked reassured and never once looked likely to concede. Our defence of Dana, Kian, Rhys and Ben W completed the tournament without conceding a goal – a fantastic achievement!

The team actually won two tournaments in one event and will represent Southport in the Merseyside County Finals of the English Schools’ F.A. tournament and will play in the Year 6 Everton F.C. tournament at Finch Farm in March. Another fabulous team effort, with every member of our squad making important contributions, including Bailey who had come along to support the rest of the team even though he couldn’t be included in the squad for this competition.
