Planner Competition 2014/15

We were delighted with the quality of the entries for the planner cover competition this year. The entries were judged by staff and governors and they all picked the winner as Chloe from Y5. The other entries that were highly commended came from Rico, Phoebe, Tilly, Chloe (Y6), Alicia, Amelia and they can all be seen below. The final group were presented with a prize on Friday and the winning entry has been sent to the designers for our new school planner. Congratulations!

Girls Football Team Finalists

The girls football team travelled to Kirkdale yesterday to play in a tournament organised by 'Everton In The Community'. The girls played superbly and with great determination, finishing second in their group and qualifying for the semi-final. The girls won their semi-final against St Peter's from Heswall. The girls played St Paul's from West Derby, unfortunately losing 2-1 in extra time. It was a nail biting final with many fantastic saves from both goalies. The girls all received medals and met Everton Ladies Coach. It was a great tournament with a fantastic atmosphere! Special mention to Shelley Thompson for being awarded the 'Leadership Award'. Our next tournament in defending our title at the Formby Inter schools tournament next month. Thanks again to all the supporters! Mrs Allen

Girls Football Team win tournament

The Girls Football Team competed in the Formby Inter-Schools Tournament on Thursday 24th April. The girls played amazing football and didn't lose a match! The girls played against Marshide, two teams from Our Lady Of Compassion, two teams from St Lukes and Trinity St Peters. They scored a total 29 goals over the 6 matches, only conceding 3. Top goal scorer being Hannah Burton - scoring 17! The girls played extremely well as a team but special mention to Hannah Burton and Charlotte Instone - numerous coaches approached me during the tournament and commented on their skill. Well done to the whole team, they were a credit to the school. The tournament's organiser commented on not only the fantastic football they played but their politeness and manners. A big thank you (again) to all the parents, grandparents etc who helped with transport and supported the girls, it is always very much appreciated. Mrs Allen

Do you want to know what the children of Farnborough Road are doing online?

The internet is a fabulous tool that everyone enjoys using but children need to know how to keep themselves safe online.

The children completed a survey recently that asked them questions about their internet habits. The full survey results can be found at the foot of this page, however, the main points that we found out were:-

* Just under 50% have a mobile phone

* Over 70% have a tablet device of some kind

* Nearly 50 of our children have a Facebook account even though Facebook guidelines say that it is recommended for aged 13 and over.

* YouTube is used at least weekly by 60% of the children. Moshi Monsters remains very popular too.

* Over 70 pupils have posted a video on YouTube

* Over 20% (84 children) say that they have seen something online that has scared or worried them.

* 80% of children say that their families know everything that they do online. This leaves about 70 children who stated that their family did not know about their online activity or they weren't sure if they knew.

* 80% of the children said they would know what to do if they were worried about something they saw online. Because we thought this figure should have been higher, we held an Internet Safety Campaign last week.

We used our mentoring week to take some time to look at Internet Safetyu and we talked to the children about how to keep themselves safe whilst online. We would ask families to help in the following ways:-

* Monitor the use of internet in your home. Xbox online and social networking sites cause many issues.

* Keep to the age guidelines on games. 18 rated games have been graded like that for a reason. Many of these games contain graphic violence, foul language and other inappropriate content. They are not suitable for primary age children

* Talk to your child about their online behaviour. Some children behave differently online than they do in the real world. We have spoken to the children about only uploading images and text that would not embarrass their family.

The internet is a great tool, but children need help to use it sensibly and safely

Parent/Pupil Survey Results 2014

Over the past few weeks we have carried out a number of surveys in school.

All pupils had the chance to take part in a questionnaire to hear their views of the school. In addition, we have also encouraged all parents to also take part in their own survey.

The full results can be found below but the key points are:-

Pupils
445 of our children took part in this survey.

98% of the children think they are making good progress
99% think that they are taught well
97% said that they know what is expected from them with regards to their behaviour
96% said that they know what they have to do to improve and a similar number state that they are making good progress.
95% said that the school deals well with any bullying.

Parents

Approximately 240 people took part in the survey.

94% of parents said that they knew how well their child was progressing. This is an improvement on the position 12 months ago.
96% said that the teaching their child received was at least good.
96% said that their child felt safe and secure in school
97% are satisfied with their choice of school and an equal number would happily recommend us to a friend.

We carried out the surveys to help us improve and we will look closely at the areas where we scored at slightly lower levels, as well as the individual comments that parents and children have made to help us improve in the future.

Regional Athletics Finals 2014-Updated with video and results

Congratulations to our school athletics team who came third in the Merseyside Regional Indoor Athletics Competition in Widnes on Friday 28th March.

The competition was made up from 16 regional winners who came together to compete across a full day of activity. Having tied with Churchtown in our local event, we were awarded a place in this prestigious event and the team rose to the challenge magnificently.

The 29 Y5 and 6 children ran, jumped and threw really well and came third overall, the best performance by the school in this annual event. They even beat local rivals Churchtown, who came 10th. The bronze medals made up for the disappointment of missing out on the local trophy and we are very proud of their achievement.

The event was won by Legh Vale Primary from St Helens, with St Michael in the Hamlet from Liverpool coming second.

Animation Club Films

Sport Relief 21st March

Sport Relief - congratulations to everybody on their efforts for this fund raising day - we sold a total of 420 wrist bands. All the children dressed up as sports stars ranging from footballers and rugby players to horse riders, gymnasts and representatives from a variety of martial arts. All the children took part in a fun run and ran a distance of over 460 miles throughout the day - Well done everyone - a great team effort. Look out for photos on the class pages.

Bike It Breakfast

Thank you to everyone who supported the Bike It Breakfasts last week. It was fantastic to see so many families taking the opportunity to rise to school together and then enjoy a sausage sandwich! We would love as many children as possible to cycle to school as it is great for fitness and also helps keep traffic away from the local roads. Thanks to Mrs Halsall for organising this event.

Robinwood 2014

The trip to Robinwood for Y6 children was huge success. The children behaved fantastically well and they made sure that they made the most of the opportunities on offer.
