    Tue 11 Nov 2014 FRJS

    PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS – WEDNESDAY, 3rd & THURSDAY, 4th DECEMBER 2014

    ONLINE APPOINTMENT BOOKING

We will be holding our Autumn Term Parent/Teacher meetings during week beginning Monday, 2nd December 2013. Our main sessions will be on Wednesday, 3rd December after school, and Thursday, 4th December in the evening. However, some of the teachers are also offering other appointment times.
The school has introduced a new intuitive and easy to use online appointment booking system. This allows you to choose your own appointment times with teachers and you will receive an email confirming your appointments. We are confident this will be an improvement to the previous system and welcome any feedback.
Appointments can be made from today and will close the day before each session. If you wish to make any changes after this time, please contact the school office.
    Please visit:
    https://frjs.parentseveningsystem.co.uk to book your appointments.
 A short guide on how to add appointments is on the reverse of this letter – it is quite straightforward but if you have any difficulty please speak to the office staff.
 If you do not have access to the internet, please contact the school office who will be happy to add appointments on your behalf.
 If you have any mobility problems and require assistance to access school in any way, would you please let the office know prior to your appointment?
Following government changes to methods of curriculum and assessment there are lots of changes this year. We would like all families to attend one of the information presentations BEFORE your first appointment. Further details will be sent in a separate letter in the coming days.

  • Year 4 Champions

Tue 11 Nov 2014 Nick Hanlon

Year 4  - Southport and Formby Schools Everton F.C. Champions

Southport and Formby schools must be sick and tired of Farnborough football teams after the Year 4 team won the Southport and Formby Schools Everton F.C. tournament. This is the school’s fourth consecutive success of the season, every tournament they have entered they have won and they are undefeated throughout all matches.

The Year 4 did it in style; winning 6 out of 6 matches, with every outfield player scoring and not conceding a single goal! They have booked a visit to Everton’s Finch Farm to play in the Year 4 area finals later in the year.

Our opening group game saw the boys complete a 4 nil victory over Marshside with Olli Wilson and Ivo Melov each scoring and Kai Fletcher bagging two including a calmly slotted penalty.

Next up were Our Lady of Compassion from Formby who beat us in the final of this competition last year. The boys were determined to make amends and secured a comfortable 2 nil win with both goals scored by Ivo.

The third group game saw another old adversary – Our Lady of Lourdes, a school who we have met in the final of all three competitions this year! This was a well contested match with Callum Rollin finally called in to action in our goal making three fine saves. However the team worked hard and managed a 3 nil victory with two goals from Ivo and Olli getting the third.

Final group game, against Norwood saw Arthur grab two goals, Olli scoring again, and Rhys Graham getting his first of the afternoon. Another convincing 4 nil victory saw the boys qualify for the final.

The final was a three way competition with Kings Meadow and Kew Woods both making it through from their group.

Our opening match was a rather one-sided affair with Farnborough winning 5 nil. Arthur scored twice, Rhys once and Joe scored his first of the day. Our final goal was a belter from Wilf Beadell, scoring his first ever goal in competitive football. This meant every outfield player had now scored for Farnborough.

The final match of the day saw a tight encounter with Kew Woods. However with most play in Kew’s half, Farnborough finally broke the deadlock with a goal from Kai, who shortly after made it 2 nil with his second goal.

The boys should be very proud of the achievement and look forward to a visit to Finch Farm for the Year 4 finals. Special mention to our two goalkeepers, Callum Rollin and Daniel Colton who shared keeping duties and neither conceded a goal – well done boys!

  • A Team Double Cup Success

Fri 07 Nov 2014 Nick Hanlon

    A Team Cup Double Success

The A team played their first rounds of the Duddy Shield and Laurie Parr Trophy before the winter break, progressing in both with resounding victories.

The first game – The Duddy Shield Preliminary Round was against Kew Woods ‘B’. With Kian away on holiday Arthur (Year 4) Weights made his debut for the A team, slotting comfortably in to midfield, came close to scoring when he struck the crossbar. The team played some fantastic passing football and created chance after chance only to be thwarted by the Kew Woods keeper, who had the game of his life, making a string of stunning saves. Ben Lawrenson scored a hat-trick, Oscar Thompson, Rico Seddon-Davidson and  Lawrie Woods each scored a brace and further goals came Ben Wareing. George Brain had a rare opportunity to play out of goal and scored his first ever competitive goal with a superb left foot shot. The final score was 12-1 to Farnborough A team but great credit should go to the Kew Woods ‘B’ team who never let their heads drop despite the score.

The second match – A quarter-final of the Laurie Parr Trophy saw the team take on Norwood in the Autumn gloom and rain. On a very narrow pitch with extremely long grass, the team soon adapted to the difficult conditions by taking the lead through a glancing header from Lucas Balshaw. The A team encountered another keeper in good form who pulled a string of saves to keep the score to 1 nil – our own keeper George Brain not wanting to go unnoticed pulled off his own stunning save diving full length to his right - pushing the ball over the crossbar.

Another well met header from a corner saw Oscar double the lead and Kian Champion made it 3 nil with a long range strike. Once again, George not wanting to be forgotten, saved a certain goal with a reflex save diving to his left and blocking the shot with an outstretched leg. Rhys Graham and Rico were providing width on the flanks and were trying all their tricks in an attempt to further increase the score however the Norwood defence stood firm!

The final third saw Oscar break twice to complete his hat-trick (and 20th of the season) with well taken strikes. Dana, captain for the week, made it a third headed goal of the match and Lawrie Woods completed a 6 pass move, from defence to attack, with the seventh goal of the game. Rico then completed the scoring for Farnborough with a brace of goals, his second seeing him break down the left, beating defender and keeper, to round both players and slot in from an impossible angle – scoring the best goal of the match. The final score was Farnborough 9 - Norwood 2. Once again the opposition were to be commended for their spirit and attitude in defeat.

The A Team now look forward to representing Southport in the Merseyside County finals of the English Schools’ F.A. next Friday and Rhys Graham will be competing along with the Year 4 team in the Southport and Formby, Everton F.C. tournament on Tuesday.

  • Education City Homework

Thu 16 Oct 2014 Mr Antell
As I have mentioned previously, we are reviewing our homework provision in school.

As part of this we have been looking at a product called Education City. This is an online resource that allows teachers to set appropriate homework. Your child will receive some online homework in the coming days.

This can be accessed in the following ways:-
    • Log onto www.educationcity.com
    • Log in using your child's unique user name and password which has been stuck into their planner
    • If using an iPad, some of the animations will not work in Safari. To overcome this, please go to the app store and download the free Puffin app browser first. Once downloaded, open this app and then navigate to Education City using this browser.
We hope that your child will enjoy this different resource.

Once we have developed some ideas about a revised Homework Policy, I will consult with families for your views.
  • Double Title for the A Team

Thu 16 Oct 2014 Nick Hanlon

Farnborough Win English School’s and Everton Titles

The A Team collected further silverware at the start of what looks to be an exciting season already. They were taking part in a combined competition run by Everton F.C. and Southport Schools F.A.

Our opening group game saw a rather one-sided encounter with Crossens. Ben Wareing started proceedings with a pile-driver to make it one nil and Oscar scored a further two goals, including a perfectly headed corner, to make the final result three nil.

Second up were Scarisbrick Hall and Ben Lawrenson opened his account for the tournament by claiming a hat-trick, including another one of his pacey breaks down the wing. Oscar scored a fourth for the team to make it four nil to the A Team.

Our final group game against Linaker saw Farnborough already qualified for the semi-finals, so we has a swap about with Kian leading the line, followed by a spell up front for Dana. However, neither players could break the deadlock and it was left to the ever reliable Oscar to smash in the winner with virtually the last kick of the game. Three wins out of three in the group stage and a place in the semi-final against Norwood.

The semi-final was another one-sided affair with Farnborough completely dominating the match. Lawrie was creating havoc on the right wing and his powerful ruun and cross was finished off by the goal poacher Oscar. Rhys, Rico and Lucas created further chances but once again it was Oscar’s strike that sealed a two nil win and a place in the final.

The final was a repeat of the Liverpool Cup against Our Lady of Lourdes and as the rain began to come down Farnborough played some of their best football of the evening. Once again Lawrie looked strong on the right wing and another fine run saw him smash in the opening goal of the final. A victory was sealed by Oscar yet again netting, meaning he had scored in every match of the tournament. Special mention to our goalkeeper George who, when called upon looked reassured and never once looked likely to concede. Our defence of Dana, Kian, Rhys and Ben W completed the tournament without conceding a goal – a fantastic achievement!

The team actually won two tournaments in one event and will represent Southport in the Merseyside County Finals of the English Schools’ F.A. tournament and will play in the Year 6 Everton F.C. tournament at Finch Farm in March. Another fabulous team effort, with every member of our squad making important contributions, including Bailey who had come along to support the rest of the team even though he couldn’t be included in the squad for this competition.

  • B team victory

Tue 14 Oct 2014 Mr Spall

  • Rumi in School Day 4

Fri 10 Oct 2014 Mr Antell

By now EVERYONE knows who Rumi is!

    Thursday

Another busy day collecting dollars to buy fuel rods and orbs. we had a new message from the scientist who seems to have told some lies!!

We also had some video of Rumi messing in Mr Antell's room. He also seems to have stolen his shoes which he needs to give back!

We are hoping that he may come and see us in school on Friday.

    Wednesday

We had another message from Rumi today who wanted help with codebreaking. We also saw him playing in the staffroom and on the stage in the hall. Look for the videos in the podcast section.

Lots of children have managed to get alien dollars and we are getting a good collection of fuel rods and orbs.

Rumi emailed school to ask who would like to meet him on Friday as he wants to say thank you to everyone who has helped!

    Tuesday

Today we had a new message from Rumi where we saw pictures of his children. We also had a message from a very important government scientist. You can see these for yourself on the podcast tab on this site.

Lots of children are earning alien dollars so that they can buy fuel rods or transmission orbs to help Rumi get home to his family.

We have also seen some video of Rumi being VERY naughty in school and he may well be in detention later this week if it continues!!

    Monday

The Alien Week started in assembly on Monday morning when we found a mysterious cube in the school hall. The cube whirred and flashed and even made a strange noise if someone got too close.

Following a phone call from government scientists and a video message from a friendly alien called Rumi from the Planet Noomi, the children have to decide who to help. Do they help the poor Rumi get back to his family or keep the Cube safe for government scientists?

The children have a variety of tasks to complete this week and good work will earn alien money which can be exchanged for fuel rods to help the spaceship fly again.

Be sure to talk to your child about their activities during this week and keep your eye on the website and twitter feed for alien updates.

Visit our podcast section using the link on the side of this page and watch the Alien Channel develop!

  • A Team Victory

Wed 08 Oct 2014 Nick Hanlon

    Farnborough v Churchtown

    3rd October

    Southport Premier League(Away)

Our first away fixture saw the A Team battle through for a hard fought, but well deserved victory.

The opening third saw classic passing football from the Farnborough Academy, with Lucas Balshaw controlling the centre of the park, sending some searching passes for our front pair of Rico and Ben Lawrenson. Rhys and Kian were keeping it tight at the back, with Bailey looking secure between the posts. Churchtown’s keeper had been kept the busier with a number of fine saves with his feet. Ben came close with a burst of pace down the left, then with moments left of the first third Kian won a tackle, passed to Lucas, who sent it left to Lawrie. Ben Lawrenson was overlapping and a careful ball from Lawrie saw Ben round the keeper and make it one nil.

The second period continued with some fine chances being created by Ben Wareing setting up; Oscar, Rico and Bailey. Oscar brought off a fine two footed save by the Churchtown keeper, Rico broke through only to shave the outside of the left post and Bailey was clear on goal when the turf got the better of him and he missed the ball! With the whistle about to go, Churchtown put together their best move of the match to make the score one all.

In a closely fought final period both teams created chances. Oscar once again looked to score but their keeper and defender blocked his attempts. Ben L and Rhys both had close chances but couldn’t break the deadlock. Kian, Dana and Lucas defended stoutly and George made two fine saves to keep the scores even. With the final minute ticking Farnborough broke through, Dana passing from defence, Ben L made the vital pass that set Oscar through to calmly score past a stranded Churchtown keeper.

Two – One, Farnborough it remained with the boys showing their determination and teamwork to see out a well deserved victory.
